Russian and Moldovan sites are circulating a fake story which originally appeared last December claiming that a giant gold mine was discovered in Crimea. The Moldovan news site GagauzYeri.md reported on February 10 that Russian geologists discovered the world’s largest gold mine which according to preliminary estimates has more than 60-70% of the world’s available gold deposits.

The Russian site Ochevidets.ru also ran this story.

The alleged source for this story is the reputable Bloomberg agency.  However, both sites link to Bloomberg’s start page and not to any specific story. A thorough Bloomberg search does not yield any story of gold discoveries in the Crimea.

This fake first appeared on the RosInfo site on December 11. The site is currently not working, however the story remains in Google cache.
