On September 24, several Ukrainian media falsely reported that Russian television channel Zvezda, famous for its fake news items about Ukraine, had reported that a well-known football player, Andriy Shevchenko, had been appointed as the Ukrainian Ambassador to Canada. The news was accompanied by a screenshot allegedly from the Russian channel’s site.Fake screenshot

The news was then posted by NikVesti, inforesist.org, vlasti.net, pl.com.ua, from-ua.com, rupor.info, joinfo.ua.

Ukraine’s 1+1 television channel presented a short news piece based on the photo fake in a program on September 25.

It was another Andriy Shevchenko, however, a member of parliament and former journalist, who was appointed as Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada.

The Ukrainian sites mentioned above did not provide direct hyperlinks to Zvezda’s website. Instead, they simply showed the same image – the imitation of a screenshot. And it should be noted that an actual Zvezda screenshot shows the date.

The image was likely forged by an anti-Russian Facebook group, “Roissia 24”, which posted the picture before the news sites and got more than 400 reposts.
