A screenshot of the alleged story published by Radio Liberty is being circulated in the pro-Russian segment of the network. According to the title, Volodymyr Zelensky said that he was ready to hold elections in Ukraine under the condition of real security guarantees from the US — but only if the Ukrainian government counts the votes itself. «Give money for the elections, but trust my word», propagandists ridicule the statements of the Ukrainian president.

However, the screenshot with the alleged headline from Radio Liberty was edited by propagandists: in fact, the media did not publish such an article. On December 10, the Russian-language version of Radio Liberty published several articles discussing the possibility of holding elections in Ukraine, but none of the three (1, 2, 3) were published under a headline shared by propagandists.

In fact, the article on the website states that Zelensky is ready to organize new presidential elections in Ukraine within the next two to three months, provided that they are safe: «Since this issue is raised today by the US president, I will answer briefly — I am ready for the elections. Moreover, I am asking the US to help me now, together with our European colleagues, to ensure security for the elections, and then in the next 60-90 days Ukraine will be ready». The President of Ukraine did not mention anything about how exactly and by whom the votes should be counted.

According to Donald Trump, holding elections in Ukraine should be one of the points of a peaceful settlement of the war: in an interview, the US president noted that Volodymyr Zelensky has been in office for too long, which is «undemocratic», but admitted that Ukrainians can elect him for a second term. We have previously explained that the statement that Ukrainians consider Zelensky an «usurper» is a Russian narrative that does not correspond to reality; as are the statements that the Ukrainian parliament is no longer legitimate.
