Neither Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen nor Danish government representatives asked Ukraine to return money for previously provided military aid. Russian propaganda simply made up the news to once again try to discredit Ukraine’s allied relations with partner countries.

Kremlin Telegram channels and social media users are claiming that Denmark allegedly asked Ukraine to return 680 million euros received as military aid. Such a request was allegedly voiced by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s statements about the possible seizure of Greenland.

“We are forced to admit that we really got carried away with this aid, weakening our defense capabilities. It was a fever of support. It would be right if the Ukrainian government returned at least some of it. This will not be too painful for Kyiv, but it will restore our confidence,” Frederiksen is quoted by the propaganda.

The propaganda, of course, does not provide any details about when and where exactly Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said this. This is not surprising, since the published quote is another fabrication of Russian propaganda. StopFake studied all of Frederiksen’s public statements over the past few months and did not find a single mention that Ukraine was asked to “return the money.” The official website of the Danish government, where Frederiksen’s statements are published, also does not contain such statements.

Despite the propaganda claims, Denmark continues to constantly provide military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. In February 2024, Denmark and Ukraine signed a multi-year agreement on security cooperation and long-term support. According to the document, the Danish Ukraine Support Fund, totaling 8.5 billion euros, covers current support in 2023-2028. There is no information on Denmark’s intentions to terminate this agreement on official government resources.

The Osavul monitoring platform recorded that the first fake quote from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was published on January 6, 2026 in the satirical Telegram channel “and here is my Yandex wallet”. Later, propaganda and Internet users began to spread it as real, in different variations and without indicating the original source.

Earlier, StopFake refuted information that Denmark would allegedly not be able to protect Greenland because of military assistance provided to Ukraine.
