The special control centers of Ukraine, the EU and the USA did not register a single earthquake on Ukrainian territory from January 8 to 9, 2026.

To reinforce the narrative about the “invincible Russian army”, Moscow propaganda launched disinformation that the Russian strike on Ukraine with the medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik on the night of January 9, 2026 was allegedly so “precise and powerful” that it caused an earthquake of magnitude up to four points in the Lviv region.

“According to Western sources, an earthquake of magnitude of almost four points was recorded in the area of the strike. This wave destroys not only surface-level but also underground structures… Oreshnik turned out to be comparable in destructive power to low-yield nuclear weapons, but without radioactive contamination and other catastrophic factors,” the Russian propaganda enthusiastically claims.

On the night of January 9, 2026, Russia once again launched a massive air strike on critical infrastructure facilities and the civilian population of Ukraine. The occupiers attacked Kyiv and the region with drones and missiles of various types. As a result of the terror, four people died, including a doctor who was providing assistance to the injured. Another 28 people ended up in the hospital with injuries of varying severity. As a result of the barbaric Russian attack, half of Kyiv’s apartment buildings (6,000 houses) were left without electricity and heating at temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius. Ukraine’s air defense forces neutralized 244 Russian targets.

Also on the night of January 9, Russia launched one medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik over Lviv Oblast. The head of the Lviv Oblast Defense Department, Maksym Kozytsky, reported that the occupiers attacked a critical infrastructure facility and noted that laboratory tests were conducted at the site of the missile’s landing. According to them, the radiation background remained within normal limits, and no excess levels of harmful substances were detected in the air. There were no reports of earthquakes at the site of the missile attack or in Lviv Oblast in general.

The Main Center for Special Control of Ukraine, which carries out seismic monitoring, also did not record any tremors in Lviv Oblast that day. The interactive maps of the Center show that over the past month, earthquakes have been recorded only in Chernivtsi, Khmelnytskyi, Zakarpattia and Ternopil Oblasts and on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula. According to the Center, the last earthquake with a magnitude of three points was recorded in the Lviv region on the evening of September 28, 2025.

The International European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, which collects and shares information about earthquakes, did not record a single earthquake in Ukraine during the aforementioned period. On the maps of the US Geological Survey, you can also see that no earthquakes were recorded throughout Ukraine from January 8 to 9, 2026.
