Employees of the US consulate in Milan never published a Twitter post with the flags of Ukraine and Nazi Germany. The consulate’s Twitter account was hacked. After regaining control over the account, the hacked post was deleted.

Russian language social media accounts are gleefully spreading information about a post that allegedly appeared on the official Twitter account of the US Consulate in Milan, featuring the image of the Ukrainian flag, whose upper right hand corner is bent forward, showing a German Nazi swastika behind it. The publication itself is accompanied by the caption “We all know the truth”, allegedly equating modern Ukraine with Nazi Germany.

As of February 28, 2023, there is no such post on the official Twitter page of the US Consulate in Milan. However, such an image apparently did appear on February 27, but it was published not by consular staff, but by hackers.

Social media users disseminated a hacker’s post, passing it off as the position of the US consulate in Milan.

”Our Twitter account has been affected in the past few hours by a hacker attack by unknown persons, who have modified its content in an unauthorized way. The problem was promptly resolved. We are working to identify the cause and the perpetrators of the intrusion” the Consulate tweeted on February 27.

Earlier, StopFake debunked Russian social media claims that Nazi symbols were allegedly inscribed onto German tanks before their transfer to Ukraine.
